Piero Leonardi was born in Monterotondo (Rome) in 1957 and has lived in the tuscany countryside since 2020.
Since 1981 he senses the value of a against the tide photography and undertakes its own path of experimental imprint following assiduous conversations Tazio Secchiaroli, Italian reporter and photographer of the movie scene of Federico Fellini’s films.
His artistic beginnings saw him involved in a collaboration with the sculptors Attardi, Manzù, Martinez and Berrocal, whose works he documented and interpreted, showing a personal interest in the investigation of matter and plastic form.
In the following years he combines an intense activity of writing and editorial collaboration with a conceptual photographic research.
He arrives to theorize the founding principles of an epistemology of the photographic operation: Calligrafia Fotografica®, Stile di Vista®, and “Fotografia Percettiva” on which, in 2006, he designs and activates a didactic format.
He teaches as a freelance lecturer to share his ideas and guide his students to the elaboration of a personal visual writing.
The Herbert Hoover School of Maryland (USA) has included him in a list of photographers to study for those who want to pursue creative photography.
He has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad and is the author of several publications, not only photographic.
He has collaborated with the Italian magazines Fotografare and Fotocine80 and with the American webmagazine ApogeePhoto.

TEACHING EXPERIENCES,
STUDIES AND CONFERENCES
1982
I begin an experimental phase on the relationship between Photography and Sculpture, through a series of collaborations with sculptors: Giacomo Manzù, Ugo Attardi, Carmelo Martines, Miguel Ortiz Berrocal. The aim is to tell, through the photographic image, the inspirational thrust that gave life to the photographed sculpture.
1997
I approach digital through the activity of advertising photographer, experimenting with this new technology in still life photography.
2004
I begin a more speculative and systematic technical-artistic approach: photographing not only the matter but the perceptions that arise between the photographer and the matter.
I give this type of research the name of: “The soul of things”.
2006
The new epistemological approach of creative photography also evolves into an innovative didactic format entitled: Photographic Calligraphy.
The aim of the course is to use technical knowledge not as a means to document reality but to represent our emotional perception of reality.
