2006-2008
“Less than a year after the Butterflowers collection was born, I discovered the marble quarries of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, Italy.
Huge walls that look like abstract paintings and turn into sculptures as you get closer, sculptures that can let you in.
If they let you in, it means they want to be discovered, understood, scrutinized.
I decided to please them by entering more and more into their intimacy.
And so these works, born from work that quarrymen do for other reasons, hide other works inside them, paintings within paintings, or sculptures. A game of Chinese boxes made of natural art. Man’s attention follows the extracted stone, the one that will be used to build. Leaving to the action of time what remains: natural drawings revealed in what remains, latent images that come to life thanks to the water and time that act as a development bath for the colors and shapes to emerge: from the simple signs I was looking for at the beginning, to the landscapes of the second phase, to the stains of the third, Burri, Pollock, Kandinsky, Sam Francis, Schifano: they are there, among the folds of the mountain, folds of color that become matter.”
